Audience Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Summary:
Learn how Canadian immigration policies shaped the experiences of those who attempted to enter the country. Discover how laws influenced admission, detention, exclusion, deportation, and the records created by immigration agents, medical officers, inspectors, transportation companies, and government departments across different periods of Canadian history, and where to find them.
Outline
Understanding immigration requires more than examining passenger lists. It also requires knowing which laws and policies governed an ancestor’s arrival. This presentation traces major changes in Canadian immigration legislation from the early nineteenth century through the 1950s and shows how the rules affected real families.
Each legislative period produced different records. These may include quarantine registers, inspection reports, correspondence, sponsorship forms, visa applications, deportation files, and Orders-in-Council. The presentation explains how to determine which law or policy applied at the time and which officials or government departments may have created relevant documents.
